Jungle Crows

Women’s Rugby

Our Jungle Crows Women’s team has been the most successful of any of our teams since launching in May 2009. The Women’s team went on to win three consecutive national 7s titles and the national 10s as the Indian Rugby Union pressed ahead with an ambitious development plan in advance of the Commonwealth Games. Sadly this momentum of tournaments and development could not be maintained and since 2011 we’ve struggled to find opponents and fixtures.

But it all started back in 2009:

“The Girls travelled to Mumbai on the weekend of 23/24 May to play in India's first ever National Women's Tournament. Bringing together 16 teams from all over India nobody really knew what to expect apart from the favourites being Pune, since women's rugby has been played in the city for a few years now. The Crows were trained by Coach Sunny and had been working very hard over the last few months to learn the game and get ready for this tournament.

And what a cracking tournament the girls had, reaching the final and not conceding a try until the final. The Jungle Crows turned out to be the crowd favourites also pushing Pune all the way!

  • Game 1 : Crows 20 - 0 Mumbai Rhinos
  • Game 2 : Crows 0 - 0 Kerala
  • Game 3 : Crows 15 - 0 Manipur
  • Quarter Final : Crows 10 - 0 Bhubaneswar
  • Semi Final : Crows 20 - 0 Pune B
  • Semi Final : Crows 20 - 0 Pune B
  • Final : Crows 5 - 19 Pune A

And that was it, Women’s Rugby on the way….”

It would be August 2011 before our Women’s team would lose another game. Along the way we had a famous night in Delhi playing Pune under lights at the Commonwealth Games Stadium in a final as a curtain raiser to India’s Asian 5 Nations clash with Philippines. We’ve also been fortunate to have several of our players go on to represent India in Rugby 7s.
