Twice a week our coaches go to the Ashalayam complex in Howrah to coach the former streetchildren of Ashalayam. Ashalayam offers disadvantaged children a secure home and environment in which to grow up. They provide regular educational opportunities as well as vocational chances for all the children.
Rugby is a great way for the Ashalayam children to release their energy and develop valuable team working skills. The discipline required for success at rugby assists the children as they adjust to mainstream life.
We are lucky to get involved in the many and varied activities of Ashalayam
And the latest was Surya's Rugby Day on 9 April. Surya was a boy of Ashalayam who had sadly passed away earlier in the year. The day saw ten separate Ashlayam under-16 teams battle for honours - each coached for the day by a Jungle Crows player. A mini-tournament was also held between under-19 teams from the Crows, Future Hope and Ashalayam, with Ashalayam coming out as victors. A tremendous day involving more than 100 youngsters was rounded of with lunch and small mementos for all.
